Pinnacle Brass
Scott and four of his colleagues have formed Victoria’s newest brass quintet, the Pinnacle Brass. The group is made up of members of Vancouver Island’s best musical institutions: the Victoria Symphony, Vancouver Island Symphony, Naden Band, Victoria Conservatory of Music and the University of Victoria. On March 20th at 7:30they will be presenting their debut recital at St John the Divine. Admission is by donation. For more information see their promotional video or contact Scott.
Concerto and Recital a Big Hit!
January 2011 was a big month for Scott MacInnes and Mactrombone.com. On Friday January 28th MacInnes played the Elizabeth Raum Concerto with the University of Victoria Symphony Orchestra. The piece and the performance were extremely well received. "The second movement was gorgeous and really showed off your beautiful tone." said one listener, while another attendee noted that, "the third movement sounded like movie music. And I loved that last note!" Overall it could not have gone much better.
Three days later Scott then played his Masters graduating recital entitled, The Canadian Trombone. This was a tour de force of Canadian compositions for trombone. He began the recital with another Raum piece, this time for alto trombone. Here he demonstrated his light, floating tones in the continuous high register. Immediately following this piece he returned to play a work by local composer Ian McDougall. Remember When was written to be played with the Vancouver Opera Orchestra low brass section, and on this occasion Scott showcased his teaching studio by having his students Aubrey Kelly, Caitlin Stewart, Sheila MacMillan and Doug Nelson playing back-up on this lyrical ballad. After a brief intermission MacInnes returned with a technically challenging, but beautiful piece entitled These Cloud-Capp'd Towers which was written by Maclolm Forsyth for the incredibly talented Alain Trudel. At one point the piece spans more than 4 octaves in just 2 bars. This tremendous range was tackled with ease and grace by MacInnes, giving the impression of a landscape being sculpted. The last piece on the program was the Raum Concerto for Bass Trombone that MacInnes performed on Friday night with the Orchestra. This time performed with piano. This was so well received that an encore was coaxed out of the exhausted performer. Below is a video of the encore written/improvised by the performer. Enjoy!

On January 28th Scott MacInnes will be performing Elizabeth Raum’s Concerto for Bass Trombone with the University of Victoria Symphony. This Concerto was jointly commissioned by Scott along with colleagues and friends of Douglas Sparkes in honour of his 60th birthday. Mr. Sparkes is Bass Trombonist of the Vancouver Symphony. The work is broken down into 3 movements. The 1st movement is bold & expressive, the 2nd movement, titled, "Romance for Nada" is lyrical and the final movement is rhythmic & dramatic. This will be the first time that the work is performed with orchestra, so it’s an event you don’t want to miss. For more information and/or tickets visit the University of Victoria website.

Following close on the heels of the Concerto Concert Scott will be presenting his Graduating Recital for his Masters of Music. On January 31st Scott will be performing another all Canadian Recital, which will feature works by Canadian composers Malcolm Forsythe, Ian McDougall and Elizabeth Raum. All four works to be were written in the past 20 years, and each composition will be performed on a different trombone. That’s right….four pieces….four trombones. You do NOT want to miss this.
Slide Aid 2009 a resounding success!
On Sunday April 26th 18 trombonists gathered at the Alix Goolden Hall for Slide Aid, a benefit concert with the proceeds going to the MS Society of Southern Vancouver Island. A very appreciative audience enjoyed a spectacularly varied concert, and in the end $1100 was donated to the MS Society. A big thanks to the Victoria Conservatory of Music and Long and McQuade Music who both made this event possible. Also, a huge ovation goes out to the trombonist and other musicians involved in this massive undertaking.
