On January 28th Scott MacInnes will be performing Elizabeth Raum’s Concerto for Bass Trombone with the University of Victoria Symphony.  This Concerto was jointly commissioned by Scott along with colleagues and friends of Douglas Sparkes in honour of his 60th birthday. Mr. Sparkes is Bass Trombonist of the Vancouver Symphony.  The work is broken down into 3 movements.  The 1st movement is bold & expressive, the 2nd movement, titled, "Romance for Nada" is lyrical and the final movement is rhythmic & dramatic.  This will be the first time that the work is performed with orchestra, so it’s an event you don’t want to miss. 20-trombone show to raise funds for MS

Versatile horn can be brash, subdued

By Jim Gibson, Times Colonist April 24, 2009

The sound of 20 trombones will take your breath away, promises University of Victoria trombonist Scott MacInnes, organizer of Sunday night's Slide-Aid for the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

"It's one of the most beautiful sounds possible," says MacInnes, who champions the instrument's versatility. The sound can be brash and raucous and then quiet and subdued, he says.

The Alix Goolden Hall concert includes Eric Clapton's Layla, Mussworgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition and a composition by Victoria's Ian McDougall. All but two of Sunday's professional trombonists are from the Island, according MacInnes, a Vancouver Island Symphony member. The Clapton piece has a two-part professional rhythm section.

The catchily-named Slide-Aid plays off one of the trombones most prominent features -- the slide piece. Previously in Toronto, MacInnes organized a similar concert raising thousands of dollars for Tsunami relief.

MacInnes opted for an MS benefit as he has several friends, including a local professional violinist, with the debilitating disease. One of his early teachers had MS to the degree that he eventually quit playing with the Toronto Symphony.

Tickets for the 8 p.m. concert are $15 and $20. They are available at the door or visit the website at www.mactrombone.com

Trombonists join in Slide Aid concert to help MS sufferers

Compiled by Joseph Blake, Times Colonist April 23, 2009

More than two dozen local trombonists are teaming up for Slide Aid, a massive benefit concert Sunday at 8 p.m. at Alix Goolden Hall, 907 Pandora Ave.

The brainchild of University of Victoria instructor Scott MacInness, Slide Aid will raise funds for education and services for people suffering from Multiple Sclerosis in Greater Victoria and research to find a cure for the disease.

MacInnes organized an earlier trombone concert in 2005 to raise funds for tsunami relief, and he describes the ensemble as "the sound of a men's choir, but more powerful and versatile.

"To the uninitiated, it's quite surprising!"

Trombonists from the Vancouver Island and Victoria Symphonies will join other local professionals in a wide-ranging repertoire that includes massed trombone versions of Eric Clapton's Layla, Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, and a composition by local jazz trombone master Ian McDougall.

Tickets for the benefit concert are $20, $15 for students.

Traditional Japanese Festival Music

Inspired by the old Japanese monster movie genre, Marcus Hissen and Masako Hockey present an eccentric exploration of contemporary music for trombone and percussion that joins the foreboding with the comical in search of the profound. On one level, the program contrasts impressions of joy and tranquility as in the Zen rock garden of John Cage's Ryoanji, with those of conflict and images of war by William Kraft in Encounters IV. At the same time, the ominous presence of rampaging monsters provides the best possible context for an otherwise serious evening of modern art.

Megan Hodge (acting Principal Trombone of the Victoria Symphony) and Scott MacInnes face off in a battle of the slides.  These two young talents will perform works that were written so long ago that they predate the modern trombone.  In complete contrast to this they will perform a work that was written for one of the performers in the last decade.  This is a showcase of young Canadian trombonists on their way to long and brilliant careers.

Slide Aid is a concert to raise funds for the MS Society of Canada - South Vancouver Island Chapter.  This spectacle will showcase over 20 professional trombonists from Vancouver Island, the Greater Vancouver Area and as far as Quebec.  They diverge from a plethora of backgrounds, encompassing orchestras, regular force military bands, jazz idioms, and chamber music.  The show will kick off with Eric Clapton’s Layla for 16 trombones and a rhythm section...need I say more?  When Slide Aid 2005 hit Toronto in aid of Tsunami Relief, over $2000 was raised, and an amazing time was had by all.  Let us show them that the west coast can match that and surpass it.

A big thank you goes out to the Victoria Conservatory of Music for donating such a beautiful venue.
